And The Winners Are.......

Leading lights in the egg industry have been rewarded for their contribution to the continuing success of the UK egg market at the third British Egg Awards.

 A record number of entries were received in the 2006 awards, which were set up by the British Egg industry Council (BEIC) in recognition of the resurgent egg market and to reward those who had made a significant effort to contribute to that.

Aldi wins

Aldi won the in-store award for its brightly coloured and attractive fixture, which the judges felt would attract consumers to the fixture and make them more aware of eggs in store.

Best new Lion eggs product / packaging

Marks & Spencer, new packaging

Marks & Spencer scooped the award for best new packaging with its new, attractive packaging.  The judges felt that the new packaging was very impressive, giving a clear, simple and effective message to consumers and highlighting the Lion mark prominently.

Best use of Lion egg products

McDonald’s is clear winner in food service

The panel of judges felt that McDonald’s continuing support for the Lion along with the importance they place on eggs in their product development, made them a worthy winner.

Best use of Lion Eggs in foodservice

Little Chef serves up a winner

The judges felt that Little Chef’s changing menu options, offering consumers a healthy alternative to fried eggs by using a scrambled egg mix, as well as its ongoing commitment to Lion eggs, was worthy of winning the foodservice award.

Best Product Marketing

Strong support for Stonegate

Stonegate has capitalised on the growing awareness of the Lion with a unique concept.  The judges felt that Stonegate’s innovative use of the Lion mark printed on top of the eggs, brought the Lion more into focus at the point of purchase and was deserving of the award.

The judges also highly commended Columbus eggs for its continuing excellent marketing effort, including advertising, PR, sales promotion and in-store support.

Fenton Farm eggs

Fenton Farm eggs was started three years ago and has rapidly developed a market niche.  Its high quality mixed colour, free range eggs have already been featured in many consumer magazines and on television.  With an increasing distribution list, the judges felt that Fenton Farm Eggs deserved the award.

The judges also commended Chippendale Foods for its regional marketing initiatives.

Andrew Parker, Chairman of the British Egg Industry Council, who chaired the judging panel, said: “This year’s winners are shining examples of the work that’s happening in the egg industry.  We were able to choose some excellent examples of innovation within our industry.  The standard of entries was high and the judges had a challenging task on their hands.“
