British Lion falls prey in Gold Cup upset

02 May 2008

The king of the jungle was left nursing his wounded pride as the 2008 Mascot Gold Cup race proved too much of a hurdle.  ‘Q’ the Lion, the familiar symbol of British Lion Quality eggs, began the race with his prey firmly in sight but his best efforts were hampered by an unruly mane.  Despite losing the race Q was still a winner with the crowds at Wetherby racecourse, who egged him towards the finish line with a roar. When asked about his run, a defeated Q had this to say:

“Grrrr”

British Egg Information Service spokesman, Kevin Coles, said: “While Q may not have won, he’s still doing an excellent job stamping 30 million Lion Quality eggs every day.”

The Mascot Gold Cup was first run in 2006 and in just two years has become the largest charity race of its kind in the world. The event is organised by Yorkshire Young Farmers and raises funds for charities including Sue Ryder Care. This year’s theme was Healthy Hearts, so win or lose it was the perfect reason for British Lion eggs to get involved.
